The Main Attraction (Food and Wine)

Yes, Italy is a beautiful place and yes Milan is the captial city of fashion but we alllll know people that travel to Italy aka. ME! are in it for the FOOD. Before I moved out here to Milan so many people had told me profusely that the Italians are gods of ice-cream. They were right by the way. But be warned, once you buy your first tiramisu and vanilla cone, you're hooked, an addict in fact.

On an even more serious note. BURGER WAVE. Remember the name. If you ever find yourself in passing of Milan and need yourself some burger action, this is where you must go! The restaurant is one of two owned by a lovely couple who lived in Australia for while. They moved back to Milan and opened up two Australian themed resaurants, one being Burger Wave, and the other a Fish and Chips restaurant.

Aperitivo is a huge / beautiful thing in Italy where pretty much EVERY bar will put on a buffet of food. The idea is that you turn up anywhere between 6:00 and 9:00pm and pay their Aperitivo price which is anywhere from 5 to 12 euros (depending on the bar). You are paying for your drink and to be let loose on their buffet table. (When i say let loose, it is common courtesy to buy another drink) This is obviously excellent news for us students! One of our favourites is at a cocktail bar named Ginger which is on the Navigli Canal. They make the best cocktails i have ever tasted and pretty much all of them include ginger... hence the name.

Pizza. Pizza. Pizza. Bella Rosso is a restaurant at the top of Naviglio and they make the biggest (they don't even fit on the plate) and the best pizza I have ever had! Ham, Salami and Brie is what i call a slice of pizza heaven! The other place I get my pizza kicks is a little less classy.. yes it's takeaway but it is cheap, cheerful, and super tasty. We have managed to build a bit of friendship with the guys that work there... this is something i'm not sure whether i'm proud or disappointed of... joking. PROUD.

Most of the places I have written about are on The Naviglio or Naviglio Grande, this is because we live incredibly close with a very convenient walking distance. Also, the places I have and will in future be blogging about have a reasonable price range. The only problem with eating out in Milano is it's unafordably expensive as a student. However, we do like ourselves a taste of expensive, so every now and again we'll splash out and experience the good stuff! Here is a perfect example!

At the bottom of Naviglio Grande is a beautifully rustic vineria named Il Vinaccio. The place is so tiny that most of the seating area is outside - even in winter, which i love! The walls inside are crates of wine that reach the ceiling and there are a couple of tall barrels to sit around. They charge around 5.50 euros for a glass of wine but it is great wine and a great experience. They offer you a seat looking out onto the beautifully lit Canal with a blanket to wrap yourself in and plate of olives, ham and cheese. The vineria is part of a small chain and i would recommend anyone.

I realise I have literally listed every restaurant I have found a new addiction for, so sue me, I love food.
